Carrier Oils

Carrier oils are botanical oils that are vegetable/fruit-based; these are referred to as carrier oils, as they are used to ‘carry’ essential oils onto the skin.

As most essential oils cannot be used directly on the skin due to their very elevated concentration (Turtle Tip #5), carrier oils serve multiple purposes:
• they ‘carry’ essential oils to the skin safely
• carrier oils have also been shown to help essential oils penetrate the dermis efficiently and effectively (as opposed to applying essential oils directly to the skin)
• carrier oils each have their own therapeutic properties

A therapeutic grade botanical oil should be cold pressed where solvents or heat have NOT been used.

Some common and relatively inexpensive botanical oils available:

Apricot kernel oil: This oil is a good source of oleic and linoleic acid which are therapeutic for prematurely aging skin, sensitive and inflamed and irritated skin.  Suitable for all skin types. Available in all Quench Blends – Floral • CedarGrove • Revivifying Lavender • Serenity Now

Now available at the Guelph Farmers’ Market in 60 ml size.

Avocado oil: In aromatherapy, choose cold-pressed avocado oil, which may be a deep green.  This oil has a high vitamin content and high in fatty acids.  It is super emollient though easily absorbed into the skin. Suitable for dry skin, scars and wrinkles.  Caution with those with oily and/or acneic skin.  Available in all Quench Blends – Floral • CedarGrove • Revivifying Lavender • Serenity Now

Now available at the Guelph Farmers’ Market in 60 ml size.

Castor oil:

Fractionated coconut oil (Cocus nucifera):   Antibacterial, antifungal, and antiviral, along with being ultra-moisturizing and nutritious.

Because it remains liquid at room temperature, fractionated coconut oil has become a favorite among bodyworkers; it quickly absorbs into the skin, does not clog pores, does not stain sheets, provides good ‘glide’ for use in massage; good lubricating qualities; and does not possess the characteristic coconut scent.  It also as an indefinite shelf life; you do not have to worry about it going rancid.  Blends very well with essential oils and has a  light viscosity. Rich in  capric, caprylic, myristic and palmitic medium chain fatty acids and natural antioxidant  vitamins A, C, and E.

At LJ Turtle Aromatherapy we use fractionated coconut oil in our De-Frizz My Frizz serum and Art of Love Natural Glide.  Now available at the Guelph Farmers’ Market

Grapeseed oil: High percentage of linoleic and oleic acids (mono unsaturated fatty acids), rich in Vitamin E, minerals and protein.  Suitable for all skin types.  Especially oily, combination, acne skin.  Absorbs easily. Astringent properties tone and tighten skin and pores while also strengthening capillaries.

Now available at the Guelph Farmers’ Market in 60 ml size.
